The Marriages Of Matthew Towgood

Friday 14th December 2012

Craig Towgood, who lives in New Zealand, has contacted dannyhowell.net concerning the Wansey and Toogood (Towgood) families. He writes:

“Hi, My name is Craig Towgood, I am interested in the connection of Toogood. I have data that say’s the Toogood name was spelt Towgood. If my data is correct Catherine is the daughter of Matthew Towgood & Anne Gibson (2nd wife). Mary Towgood could possibly be the daughter of the same Matthew and his first wife Margaret Moore. Do you have any information that could help me.”

Danny Howell replies:

Hello Craig,
Thank you for your email enquiry with regard Matthew Towgood.

Matthew Towgood and Margaret Moore were married at St. Marylebone, Westminster, London, on 13th December 1784. The marriage certificate says Matthew Towgood, bachelor, was of this parish (St. Marylebone), and that Margaret Moore, spinster, was of the same parish. They were married by Banns. The person who married them was Curate S. Russell. Matthew and Margaret both signed the register. The witnesses were Jane Stanley and Thomas Birt.

Mathew Towgood married Ann Gibson on 28th September 1804 at Merton, Surry (Surrey). The marriage register states: “Mathew Towgood of the Parish of St. Peter in the County of Hertford, Widower, & Ann Gibson of this parish, Spinster, were married in the Church by Licence this twenty eighth day of September in the year 1804 by me T. Lancaster, Minister.”

You may or may not already have these details. If I can help you with anything else in particular, please let me know and I will try my best. With best wishes, Danny Howell.
