The Peter Gough Achievement Award

The name Peter Gough, a former Warminster Mayor and respected business man lives on through an award created in his honour.

Peter was born suffering from cerebral palsy; however he had great strength of character and determination. He was seven before he could walk. Molly, Peter’s mother, was his rock, she encouraged and supported him throughout his busy lifetime.

The Peter Gough Achievement Award is in recognition of the contribution Peter made to the community.

Peter was twice Mayor and was involved with a great many groups, he was Chairman of both Warminster Chamber of Trade, and Warminster Round Table, eventually becoming County Chairman of each, as well as elected vice president and keen supporter of Somerset Cricket Club.

All his life Peter struggled to overcome his disability. He was the first Scout with such a handicap to become a Queen’s Scout. Peter achieved far more in so many ways by his involvement and enthusiasm that few able-bodied persons could match.

Peter owned and ran his own Gentleman’s outfitters in the town, and was a member of the Chamber of Commerce.

Inspired by his school motto “courage and confidence” Peter’s greatest achievement was in living his entire life with courage and cheerful confidence. He sadly died at an early age of 50 in 1991.

The Peter Gough Achievement Award was founded in 1992. Peter was a man who both overcame a handicap and was concerned to help young people do the same. This award aims to provide support to young handicapped persons resident in Warminster and the surrounding districts.

The Peter Gough Achievement Award will go to the child or young person who, despite handicap, in the opinion of an independent award team, has achieved most in the year.

To be eligible, a child or young person must be over the age of 9 and under the age of 19 by 27th September in the year nominated.

The last date for receipt of entries each year is 31st August. The first prize is £500 with a smaller cash prize for the runners-up. The nominees will be invited to a relaxed discussion with three local members of the community.

The Award Presentation will be held annually on a date nearest 27th September (Peter’s birthday).
