Dennis Barnard, in the book Crocodiles And Chicken Chasers (published November 2000), noted:
Dead Maids was a crossroads. Long ago, before the new flyover, a farmer had two lovers. They had no idea there was competition and when they each realised that the other existed there was a terrible argument and fight and the two young ladies died. Hence Dead Maids. Yet another story suggests that two young ladies were hanged at “Dead Maids Cross Roads”. Their crime was informing the local highwayman when a coach was expected at the Black Dog Inn.
