Adrian Phillips, in the book The Warminster Trail, compiled for the Warminster Festival 1989, and published by Aris & Phillips Ltd., wrote:
If Church Street is the grandest residential part of the town, a distinction that Vicarage Street – off our Trail – might challenge, the Market Place is certainly the commercial heart.
You only have to look at the buildings above the shops to see how splendid it must have been.
Some of the Georgian buildings remain substantially untouched, notably the hotels such as the Old Bell and the Bath Arms.
Some of the shop fronts in the Victorian manner still stand: Charisma; No.38; and Coates & Parker.
Many of the shops are unexceptional and some modern ones attempt to keep in style: Bateman and Prudential; of others, the less said the better!
It is unfortunate that some chain stores simply repeat their design wherever they happen to be, regardless of context.
