Harry Povey’s West End Cafe And West End Takeaway At West Street, Warminster, In March 1987

March 1987

The West End Cafe and the West End Takeaway (proprietors H. & E.M. Povey) at 33 West Street, Warminster (immediately east of the Cock Inn). The cafe was on the left hand side and the takeaway on the right. Both were owned and run by Harry Povey. The signs advertise Embassy Number 1 and John Player Special cigarettes, Wall’s icecream, confectionery, king size hot dogs, cheeseburgers, and fish and chips. The lady walking away, with her back to the camera, is Betty Holmes, who lived two doors away at 29 West Street.

Two signs read ‘West End Video Club’. Video films could be rented for watching at home. And there are two bubblegum machines (one on the wall, one on the pavement).

The photographs were taken by Danny Howell during March 1987.
