Bishopstrow House

Bruce Watkin, in his Bishopstrow Village Trail leaflet, produced in 1984, later incorporated into the book Trails In And Around Warminster published in 1985, noted:

The former manor house, now Bishopstrow House, now a hotel. The early manor house was by the river, south of the road, and was replaced by the present house by the Temples (Temple family) in 1817. An elaborately decorated tunnel was first made under the road to connect old and new gardens. John Pinch the Elder, the Bath architect, was employed to build the new house, a 2-storey square of fine ashlar. The severity of its Grecian style is relieved by the recessed door and columns on the east front and the 2-storey semi-circular bay on the south. The old house has gone but some of the 18th century garden ornaments, a temple of 1770, and a summerhouse survive.
