From The West Wiltshire District Guide 1978:
The village of Upton Scudamore, situated between the towns of Warminster and Westbury, was originally an Anglo-Saxon village named Opetone. Following the Norman Conquest, the manor of Opetone was granted to the ancestors of the Scudamore gamily, from whom the name Upton Scudamore derives. A noteable feature of the village is the Church of St. Mary the Virgin, which has a fine Norman doorway and Norman font, and parts of the church also date back to medieval times. There is no industry in the village and the agriculture is chiefly arable, with beef cattle and pigs. There are pleasant walks over the chalk downland to the east of the village.
