Chitterne

From The West Wiltshire District Guide 1978:

Chitterne is a small village situated between Heytesbury and Shrewton on Salisbury Plain.

Much of the land and numerous houses are owned by the War Department and there is a fair amount of activity by the Army in the surrounding area; despite this the rolling hills and valleys attract many holiday visitors.

Chitterne is an ancient village and has a connection with Lacock, it being the place chosen by the Abbess of Lacock Abbey as a retreat when forced to flee at the time of the Reformation.

The Chapel of St. Andrew and the old gateway can be seen as one walks through the village on the Tilshead road. The chapel was once used as a hospice for travellers when the old Bath road ran through the village but little of it now remains.
