The Visitors’ Guide To Mere

From the Visitors’ Guide To Wiltshire, circa 1973:

Mere is a mellow little town, where the poet William Barnes used to teach and where Charles II stayed in disguise after the Battle of Worcester.

It is situated in the extreme south-west of the county and is near the source of the River Stour. There are many interesting houses built of stone from the nearby Chilmark Quarries.
