Wilfred Middlebrook, in The Changing Face Of Warminster, first written in 1960, updated in 1971, noted:
Higher up the hill, in the district appropriately known as Hillwood, there are more new estates including the council estate of Hillwood, erected in 1948, and the more recent Ashley Place and Ludlow Close estates. Mount Lane is a mere footpath dropping steeply to Marsh Street, but there are new bungalows now bordering this. A local name for Hillwood was “Viper’s Island.”
