Furlong, Warminster

Extract from The Changing Face Of Warminster by Wilfred Middlebrook, published in 1971:

Adjoining Button’s Yard is Preston House, bordered on the east by the Furlong, a narrow lane by which pedestrians can reach Fairfield Road. A furlong is a long furrow, an ancient Celtic measurement based on the length ploughed by one horse or ox-team without pause.
