The Swan River (The Were), Warminster

Extract from The Changing Face Of Warminster by Wilfred Middlebrook, published in 1971:

Beyond the Regal car park is a row of lock-up garages built by John Hall and Co. They were transferred to this site en bloc from where the cinema now stands. The road rises steeply here, and a glimpse can be had over the hedgerow of Warminster’s Swan River flowing openly along the edge of the field.

The latest official town guide calls this stream of ours the Were, but for generations it has been known locally as the Swan River. It is a combination of the various streams that flow into the town from Sambourne, Cley Hill, Bugley, etc., and pass under Weymouth Street and through the Pleasure Park to join the Wylye near Calveswater.
