From Chicklade And Pertwood, A Short Parish History by E.R. Barty, M.A., Chicklade, Old Rectory, first published December 1955:
BURIAL IN WOOLLEN
From the burial register of early date (1712) –
(1) “The wife of the Rev. Luke Sympson was buried in Woollen (1722) Mary Hibbert making affidavit of the same before Rev. Fra. Holland, Rector of Sutton Veny.
In the same register we have:-
(2) “Mary, daughter of Elias and Elizabeth Lucas died 1724, affidavit was made November 18 by Rabara (?) Mundy that she was buried in Woollen according to Act.
There are various other entries in the same Church Register of burials in Woollen up to 1758 and perhaps later.
The year 1758 (July – December) seems to have been a catastrophic one for the small parish of Chicklade. Entries of 25 burials of adults (no children) are contained in this Register. Was there some epidemic or famine to account of this great loss to the community?
