Silk, Flax And Vineyards At Mere

Ralph Whitlock, in his book Salisbury Plain, published in 1955, writes:

. . . . there were once silk works at Mere. Flax was spun there too, and somewhere I have read, though I cannot think where, that here the Romans cultivated vineyards on terraced gardens under the hill.
