Pool Farm Cottages, Corsley, 1947

Pool Farm Cottages, on the Chapmanslade Road at Corsley, pictured in 1947, when they were part of Lot No.1 in the auction sale of a large portion of the Longleat Estate. The auction, held at the Grand Cinema, Frome, on Thursday and Friday, 24th and 25th July 1947, was under instructions from Henry Frederick Thynne, the 6th Marquess of Bath, solely for the purpose of paying Death Duties of £700,000. The auction comprised 5,400 acres of land, 20 farms, 23 smallholdings, 3 public houses, 130 cottages, as well as shops and a brickyard, situate in Wiltshire and Somerset. Cooper & Tanner Ltd., were the auctioneers.

In the sale catalogue, Pool Farm Cottages, were described as “Quite recently constructed of brick, with tiled roofs, each containing: small hall from entrance porch; sitting room; kitchen with range and built-in dresser; pantry; small landing and three bedrooms.” Each cottage had a wash-house, coal-house, and w.c., outside. Water was laid on to the cottages by stand-pipes. The cottages, along with Pool Farm House, the farm buildings, and 163 acres of land, were let to farmer Maurice W. White on a yearly Michaelmas tenancy, at £250 per annum.
