An Enormous Number Of Sheep

In his book Wiltshire (published by Alfred A. Knopf in 1930), R. Welldon Finn writes:

An enormous number of sheep – there are nearly half a million in the county – feed on the Downs and on Salisbury Plain, the chief fairs being at Marlborough, Britford, Salisbury and Tan Hill.
