A Handbook For Residents And Travellers In Wilts And Dorset, (fifth edition published by John Murray of Albemarle Street, London, in 1899), states:
“Sherrington, remarkable for a moated mound, west of the small church, 100 feet in diameter at top, on which stood a castle of the wealthy and powerful Giffards, whose property in Plantagenet times extended over many parishes in this county.”
