Farm Labourers’ Determined Stand At Knook

From The Wiltshire Times, Saturday 10th March 1888:

Heytesbury. Farm Labourers’ Determined Stand.
The whole of the employees on a farm at Knook came out on strike last week against working an extra hour for the same pay. From time immemorial the farm labourers here have worked from 7.00 a.m. to 6.00 p.m. in the spring and summer and from seven to five in the autumn and winter, for the same wages all year round. Recently some farmers in the district reduced the wages from 10s. to 9s. a week, which caused dissatisfaction. When this farmer told his men to work until 6 p.m. they asked for an extra shilling. When this was refused they went home in a body. – The farmers have now recognised the justice of the men’s claim and the matter has been amicably settled.
